White House Updates Plan to Counter Violent Extremism at Home

The Obama Administration has issued an updated Strategic Implementation Plan to Empower Local Partners to Prevent Violent Extremism in the United States. The original strategy and corresponding plan published in 2011 laid the groundwork for new additions to be made in order to counter domestic violent extremism. The administration specifically aims to address extremists’ “ability to entice people to travel great distances, to direct attacks, and to inspire others to act from afar”.

Key changes include:

  • Research and Analysis: More specific research is needed to advance current programs.
  • Engagement and Technical Assistance: Building relationships with communities and stakeholders is necessary to move forward.
  • Interventions: The federal government aims to support local intervention efforts.
  • Communications and Digital Strategy: Strategy to counter extremism via online platforms will include local stakeholders.
