U.S. Sentencing Commission Explores Data on “Cyber Technology in Federal Crime”

A new report released by the United States Sentencing Commission provides focused data on individuals who used cyber technology to perform federal crimes. The Commission used computer technology themselves to search through “Presentence Investigation Reports (PSRs), plea agreements, and indictments for individuals sentenced between 2014 and 2021,” looking for terms that identified the use of cyber technology in connection with the crimes.

The exploited cyber technology explored in this analysis includes cryptocurrency, the dark web, hacking, and various combinations of the three. The data reveal the type of crimes committed, the technology used, and the demographics of the criminals.
