July 27, 1996:
During the Summer Olympic games in Atlanta, GA, Eric Rudolph planted a backpack containing a bomb in the crowded Centennial Olympic Park. While a diligent security guard, Richard Jewell, was able to start evacuating the crowd, the bomb detonated before everyone could leave. The explosion was just one of four other bombings linked to Rudolph. —(FBI)
