At a municipal center in Virginia Beach, VA, a disgruntled employee opened fire indiscriminately on all three floors of the operations building, carrying “two handguns and plenty of ammunition” in extended magazines, purchased legally (NYT). The shooting was reported at 4:08 p.m., on the same day he had emailed in his resignation to superiors. Police arrived shortly after and began their search for the assailant. A gunfight ensued on the second floor of the building, leaving one officer shot and wounded. The gunman was shot by officers and critically injured, and later died. In total, twelve people were killed and five others were injured. A motive is yet unclear, and still under investigation, as officials say he was in good standing with employers, was not being forced to leave, but his employment was nearing the end.
