On the morning of August 3, 2019 just before 10:40am in El Paso, Texas, a gunman, Patrick Crusius, opened fire at a Walmart Supercenter at Cielo Vista Mall. Witnesses claim he began shooting at random before entering the “at capacity” store and continued his barrage. Officials say Crusius drove 650 miles from Allen, Texas to commit the act, targeted at Mexican immigrants. Within six minutes of the first 9-1-1 call, police arrived at the scene. Crusius had driven to a nearby intersection where he got out of his car and surrendered without incident. The mass shooting resulted in 22 fatalities (as of 08/05/2019) and dozens wounded, and is being investigated as domestic terrorism and a hate crime. (TIME) (CNN)
