The hype of a zombie attack has come back to the news after being dormant for some time. The Pentagon is prepared for such a threat (and, “would like to stress that they [The Pentagon] don’t actually think that this zombie apocalypse is going to happen”). Drafted in 2011, CONPLAN 8888 is a strategic procedure meant to, “establish and maintain a vigilant defensive condition aimed at protecting humankind from zombies.” This proposal was first implemented as a training tool, “where students [could] learn about the basic concepts of military plans and order development through a fictional training scenario […] [removing the] paranoid hysteria that would revolve around a false plan to combat a real-life adversary.” This exercise has been noted to “boost retention of critical knowledge [regarding preparation].”
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also posted information regarding a “Zombie Apocalypse,” as well as blogs making the public aware and prepared; Dr. Ali Khan (U.S. Assistant Surgeon General) agrees with the idea to be prepared for a zombie apocalypse because, “[i]f you are generally well equipped to deal with a zombie apocalypse you will be prepared for a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake, or terrorist attack.”
