Official Report Finds “a Multitude of Errors and Willful Negligence” Led to Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Disaster
The National Diet of Japan Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission (NAIIC) released its first official report. The report “provides a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the March 11th, 2011, including causes and the response to the nuclear accident. It also includes recommendations designed to prevent the same mistakes in case of future accidents. Appendix includes survey results of the people in Fukushima.”
The report comes from the first independent commission chartered by the Diet in the history of Japan’s constitutional government. The commission found that although the disaster was triggered by natural events the subsequent nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant “was a profoundly manmade disaster – that could and should have been foreseen and prevented.”
The report’s executive summary and appendices are currently available in English on the NAIIC website here, with translation of the main report to follow.
