In Case You Missed It: MMWR


The Homeland Security Digital Library (HSDL) maintains a collection of the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), which collects and analyzes data from the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on epidemiology and public health. Each issue of the MMWR is packed with raw and analyzed public health data and scientific studies from some of the top minds in the United States. Below we highlight some of the most current and informative studies included in their weekly reports.

Progress Toward Measles Elimination Worldwide, 2000–2023

From 2022-2023, measles cases increased approximately 20%, and the number of countries with large outbreaks went from 36 to 57. In order to eradicate the disease, this study stresses the importance of reaching all children to receive the proper doses of measles vaccines.

From January 2023 to June 2024, 74 vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks occurred in 39 countries, mostly in Africa, due to insufficient vaccination rates. Effective international response requires timely, high-quality vaccination campaigns to boost immunity and stop these outbreaks.
