ISIS, Still the Most Potent

The State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism released “Country Reports on Terrorism 2016” this month. According to the report, total terrorist attacks and overall deaths due to terrorist attacks decreased for the second year in a row.  ISIS [Islamic State of Iraq and Syria] remained the “most potent terrorist threat to global security, with eight recognized branches and numerous undeclared networks operating beyond the group’s core concentration in Iraq and Syria.” Iran also continued their reign as the “foremost state sponsor of terrorism in 2016 as groups supported by Iran maintained their capability to threaten U.S. interests and allies.”
