Guidance for Responsible AI Use in Government Agencies


The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) recently released a memorandum titled “Advancing Governance, Innovation, and Risk Management for Agency Use of Artificial Intelligence” to emphasize the need for accountable and ethical AI practices throughout government agencies. Highlighted within the document are requirements and recommendations for for AI governance, and specific risk management guidance.

By assessing risks and ensuring compliance, agencies will be able to utilize AI’s potential while minimizing obstacles. The OMB’s memorandum reinforces a commitment to responsible AI adoption and ethical implementation, stating that “Agencies must improve their ability to use AI in ways that benefit the public and increase mission effectiveness, while recognizing the limitations and risks of AI and when it is not suited for a given task.” Furthermore, this memorandum sets an important example for AI adoption, showcasing the government’s dedication to leveraging technology for the benefit of society while remaining transparent and equitable.
