“On June 18, 2015, Dylann Roof was arrested and charged with killing nine people in a shooting on at the historic black Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17, 2015. According to one of the victims, Roof said: ‘You rape our women, and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go,’ during the shooting. Roof had posted a manifesto citing his radicalization after seeing the coverage of the Trayvon Martin case and laying out a racist worldview. He had also posted pictures on his website and Facebook featuring white supremacist imagery, including the Confederate battle flag, patches of the Apartheid South African flag, and a T-shirt featuring the number ‘88,’ which is often used as a symbol for ‘Heil Hitler.’”
