1989 – Loma Prieta Earthquake in Northern California

On October 17th, 1989 a magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred approximately 10 miles northeast of Santa Cruz, CA, resulting in 63 deaths, 3,757 injuries, and an estimated $10 billion in damage. It was the largest earthquake to occur on the San Andreas fault since the great San Francisco earthquake in April 1906.
