DHS Artificial Intelligence Roadmap 2024

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released the Artificial Intelligence Roadmap 2024. According to DHS, this Roadmap is the “most detailed AI plan put forward by a federal agency to date.” With the continued integration of artificial intelligence into our everyday lives, it is essential that we continue to research the positive and negative impacts AI can have for our critical infrastructure, privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties. This document addresses the responsible use of AI, recommends a government-wide approach, and provides an overview of three lines of effort regarding the use of AI in the advancement of the Homeland Security missions.

“This initiative aligns with President Biden’s Executive Order 14110, ‘Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence,’ which tasks DHS with critical roles to:

  • manage AI in critical infrastructure and cyberspace;
  • promote the adoption of AI safety standards globally;
  • reduce the potential risk of AI’s use to facilitate weapons of mass destruction attacks;
  • combat AI-related intellectual property theft; and,
  • ensure our nation attracts talent to develop responsible AI in the United States.”

This roadmap include three “lines of effort” titled “Responsibly Leverage AI to Advance Homeland Security Missions,” “Promote Nationwide AI Safety and Security,” and “Continue to Lead in AI through Strong, Cohesive Partnerships.” DHS’ goal is to realize the full potential of artificial intelligence while protecting the public from the negative consequences of irresponsible or adversarial use.
