In his budget proposal for 2005, President Bush has requested a significant increase in funding for the controversial Computer Assisted Passenger Prescreening System (CAPPS) II. The system being developed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), is expected to receive $60 million in 2005 funding, an increase of over $15 million requested for 2004. CAPPS II has come under fire from privacy advocates who fear that passengers’ personal information may be unnecessarily shared or stored in government databases.
