Anticipating Future Pandemic Recovery with Equity in Mind

As the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become apparent that future disaster recovery must address the inequalities laid bare by the crisis. The Pandemic Recovery Metrics to Drive Equity (PanREMEDY) initiative provides a roadmap for ensuring that future recovery efforts are both comprehensive and fair.

The PanREMEDY initiative, developed by the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, offers crucial guidance for ensuring that recovery from pandemics like COVID-19 is equitable. Designed for state and local leaders, PanREMEDY lays out comprehensive metrics to help communities rebuild in ways that prioritize those most affected by the crisis.

The project focuses on equity, ensuring that recovery efforts address the social vulnerabilities that COVID-19 exposed. PanREMEDY provides a framework of 31 indicators, covering areas such as governance, health, economic stability, and social resilience. These indicators can help track progress and make sure that recovery efforts reach every corner of society, particularly marginalized groups.

What makes PanREMEDY unique is its emphasis on using recovery as an opportunity to reshape systems for the future, rather than just returning to normal. By incorporating community feedback and focusing on long-term outcomes, this approach ensures that public health, economic, and social policies become more resilient to future pandemics.
