Artificial Intelligence in Critical Infrastructure

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released an original resource for organizations that play a role in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) supply chain and U.S. critical infrastructure. The Roles and Responsibilities Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Critical Infrastructure was developed in response to findings of the DHS Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board that clear guidance is necessary for cloud and compute infrastructure providers, AI developers, critical infrastructure owners and operators, civil society, and the public sector to safeguard our critical infrastructure and consumers as AI is deployed at various layers of the supply chain. The AI Safety and Security Board is comprised of leaders representing private industry, academia, civil society, and the public sector who are tasked with developing recommendations to help critical infrastructure stakeholders use AI technology responsibly and securely.

The framework aims to achieve the following:

  • Provide a set of voluntary responsibilities for safe and secure use of AI in critical infrastructure among five key roles, including AI developers and infrastructure providers, owners, and operators
  • Evaluate the five key roles across five responsibility areas including securing environments and ensuring safe and secure deployment
  • Provide recommendations to enhance safety, security, and trustworthiness of AI systems that are deployed across the nation’s critical infrastructure sectors

For all the details, read the complete framework here.
