Fact Sheet: Container Security Initiative
U.S. Customs and Border Protection
"The Container Security Initiative [CSI] is CBP's [U.S. Customs and Border Protection] highly successful effort to establish working bilateral partnerships with foreign authorities to identify high-risk cargo containers originating at ports throughout the world before they are loaded on vessels destined for the United States. Currently, there are 50 operational CSI ports in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and North and South America. Beginning in January 2002, CBP proposed the Container Security Initiative, an initiative to push U.S. port security back into the supply chain to the port of origin. This has produced cooperative arrangements and established standards of port security that are spreading throughout the world."
