The “2024 Report on the Cybersecurity Posture of the United States” from the National Cyber Director assesses the effectiveness of the United States’ national cyber policy and strategy and the Federal departments and agencies’ ability to implement them. This document is a report to Congress on the cybersecurity posture of the United States over the past year.
At the start of the report, the National Cyber Director states that the U.S. is “in the midst of a ‘fundamental transformation’ in our Nation’s cybersecurity.” He asserts that simply reacting to the threats as they happen and focusing on the worst aspects of the cyber incidents is ultimately insufficient in protecting and building the nation’s security and economic prosperity efforts. According to the report, the Biden administration has kickstarted the National Cybersecurity Strategy Implementation Plan, providing opportunities for stakeholders to invest and commit to improving the cybersecurity posture of the U.S.
The report first outlines the “Top Trends of 2023” which include evolving risks to critical infrastructure, ransomware, supply chain exploitation, commercial spyware, and artificial intelligence. It then addresses “current efforts” such as enhancing federal coordination and partnerships, strengthening the national cyber workforce, and investing in resilient next-generation technologies. Finally, the “Future Outlook” provides a list of initiatives the Federal Government are taking to further strengthen the cybersecurity posture, and ensures that these initiatives are already included in the 2025 President’s Budget request.
