New Report on Anti-Mosque Activities in New York State

Religious Freedom Under Attack: The Rise of Anti-Mosque Activities in New York State The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) has released a new report about the growing anti-Muslim and anti-mosque sentiment in the state of New York. The project which has garnered the most attention has undoubtedly been the Park51 Muslim Community Center, often maligned as the "World Trade Center mosque." Less infamously, eight other incidents were reported across New York state during 2010, including one incident where a teenager fired a shotgun into the ground near a mosque. The NYCLU makes several recommendations:
  • Elected officials should play an active role in protecting the rights of Muslim New Yorkers and fostering cross-cultural understandings.
  • New York should prepare for another backlash against Muslims leading up to the 10th anniversary of 9/11, and during next year’s presidential and congressional elections.
  • The NYPD should reject trainings based on the flawed radicalization theory and include education about New York’s diverse cultures and religious communities in its training materials.
  • New York’s schools must take the lead in creating cultural understanding and combating bigotry.
  • Government officials must vigorously enforce laws that defend religious worship.
