Port Recovery in the Aftermath of Hurricane Sandy: Improving Port Resiliency in the Era of Climate Change

Hurricane SandyIn October of 2012, Hurricane Sandy unleashed deadly and costly damage across the eastern coast of the United States. Particularly hard-hit coastal communities in the northeast experienced a 14-foot storm surge that extensively damaged local ports, including the Port of New York and New Jersey. This extreme weather occurrence paired with rising sea levels not only threatened eastern infrastructure, but also brought about the rising awareness of the connection between climate change and homeland security. The Center for a New American Security has recently released a "Voices from the Field" report on Hurricane Sandy, titled "Port Recovery in the Aftermath of Hurricane Sandy: Improving Port Resiliency in the Era of Climate Change."

The report details, "… a first-hand account of Hurricane Sandy’s impact on the port of New York and New Jersey and the subsequent port recovery effort." To provide this first-hand account, researchers first present details on the infrastructure background of the U.S. Marine Transportation System and the Port of New York and New Jersey. "Pre-Storm Preparations" and "Hurricane Sandy Damage" sections follow and include multiple photographs of Hurricane Sandy's widespread damage to the infrastructure of the coastal regions.

In addition to first-hand accounts of Hurricane Sandy's damage, the report investigates and provides, "… recommendations to the public and private authorities charged with strengthening port communities and reducing the potential impact of natural disasters and human caused events." In these sections, "Blind Spots," "Port Vulnerabilities," and "Resiliency Strategies" provide readers with a better understanding of what coastal communities can do to prepare for extreme weather patterns of the future.
