Statement on Federal Disaster Assistance for Oklahoma [August 31, 2007]
From the Document: "The President today declared a major disaster exists in the State of Oklahoma and ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes during the period of May 24 to June 1, 2007. Federal funding is available to State and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes in the counties of Bryan, Comanche, Cotton, Logan, Pontotoc, Seminole, Stephens, and Tillman. Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide. R. David Paulison, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Philip E. Parr as the Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal recovery operations in the affected area. FEMA said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the State and warranted by the results of further damage assessments."

From the Document: "The President today made additional disaster assistance available to the State of Louisiana by authorizing an increase in the level of Federal funding for Public Assistance projects undertaken as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Under the President's major disaster declaration issued for the State of Louisiana on August 29, 2005, for Hurricane Katrina, Federal funding was made available to State and local governments in multiple parishes for debris removal and emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance, at 75 percent Federal funding. For a period of up to 72 hours, Federal funding was made available at 100 percent of the total eligible costs for emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance. The period of up to 72 hours at 100 percent excluded debris removal. On September 1, 2005, the President amended his declaration of August 29, 2005, and extend ed the period for 100 percent Federal funding for debris removal and emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance, for a period of 60 days retroactive to the date of the major disaster declaration."

From the Document: "The President today declared an emergency exists in the affected area of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and ordered Federal aid to supplement Commonwealth and local response efforts in the area struck by severe storms and flooding beginning on October 7, 2005, and continuing. The President's action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives, protect property and public health and safety, or to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in Bristol County. Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent Federal funding."

Fact Sheet: Gulf Coast Update: Hurricane Relief, Recovery, and Rebuilding Continues [March 8, 2006]
This fact sheet describes progress being made in the process to help the Gulf Coast recover and rebuild following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. As of the date of this publication 80 percent of debris had been removed, plans to secure levees and floodwalls have been created, small business loans offered, USDA has provided millions in loans and grants to help rural businesses, the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005 is in place and temporary housing was found for over 10,000 displaced residents.
