Cyber Security Tip: Understanding Distributed-Denial-of-Service Attacks
"One of the most significant cyber threats to businesses, local and federal government agencies is the Distributed-Denial-of-Service attack (DDoS). A Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS) occurs when an attacker commands a number of computers to send numerous requests to a target computer. The overwhelming flood of requests to the website or computer network can cause it to shut down or fail to handle the requests of legitimate users, much like a rush hour traffic jam on the freeway. This type of attack can completely disrupt an organization's operations until the network is able to be restored. Understanding the basic concept and methods of a DDoS attack can help operators of both large and small networks mitigate the severity of the attack."

Backdoors and Holes in Network Perimeters: A Case Study for Improving Your Control System Security
"The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of a natural gas utility was compromised resulting in a reduction of operation. The breach was discovered when operator interfaces became unresponsive and the system was no longer acquiring data. As a result, the system was disconnected from the network and a combination of manual operation overrides and limited fail-over to a backup server went into effect until the environment could be restored. Technicians troubleshooting the incident identified the deletion of several core application files on the primary control server as the source of the problem."

South Korean Malware Attack
"Reporting and technical details surrounding the malware used in the March 20, 2013, attack on South Korean assets have been varied and inconsistent. However, there are some commonalities reported across multiple organizations that provide some level of insight into the malware, dubbed DarkSeoul. The common attributes of the attack campaign are the following: [1] The malicious file wipes the master boot record (MBR) and other files. [2] The malware was hard coded with a specific execution date and time and searches machines for credentials with administrative/root access to servers. [3] The malware is written to specifically target South Korean victims. [4] The attack is effective on multiple operating systems. [5] The design is low sophistication -- high damage. When assessing the potential risk to U.S. Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources (CIKR), it is important to understand that DarkSeoul appears to have been coded for a specific target in this case and designed to evade typical South Korean antivirus processes. As this malware is currently packaged, it is a low risk to U.S. CIKR, however, the concepts underpinning this attack would likely succeed in many common enterprise environments. For this reason, U.S. CIKR owners and operators should continue the best standard security practices to avoid infection and propagation of a wiper or other type of malware that may impact their systems."

ICS-CERT Advisory: ICSA-12-325-01 - SINAPSI Devices Multiple Vulernabilities
"This advisory is a follow-up to the alert titled ICS [Industrial Control Systems]-ALERT-12-284-01--Sinapsi eSolar Light Multiple Vulnerabilities that was published October 10, 2012, on the ICS-CERT [ [Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team] ] Web page. Independent researchers Roberto Paleari and Ivan Speziale identified four vulnerabilities and released proof-of-concept (exploit) code for the Sinapsi eSolar Light Photovoltaic System Monitor without coordination with ICS-CERT, this vendor, or any other coordinating entity known to ICS-CERT. The eSolar Light has also been sold with different brands and names. Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities would allow an attacker to gain unauthorized access, access private information, and execute remote code. The eSolar Light is a monitoring system used in solar power applications. However, Sinapsi also reports that other Sinapsi devices (eSolar, eSolar DUO, eSolar Light) are vulnerable to these vulnerabilities. These devices are used in the Energy Sector."
