• Strategies for Building Confidence in the COVID-19 Vaccines

  From the Executive Summary: "Public engagement and effective communication through clear, transparent messaging will play a central role in building confidence in the COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] vaccines. This rapid expert consultation describes a variety of public engagement and communication strategies that can be implemented at the national, state, and local levels to change patterns of interaction with the public, address hesitancy about the vaccines, and build trust. In general, given the prevalence of local concerns and information needs, it is important to support local communities with the resources needed to engage people and reinforce information coming from the federal and state levels. Strong community engagement aimed at identifying and understanding local concerns will help determine what messaging, delivered by whom, will be most effective. Moreover, it will be essential to provide people who are hesitant, reluctant, distrusting, or otherwise unmotivated with respect to the COVID-19 vaccines with the resources, information, and support they need to make the vaccination decision that is right for them. This rapid expert consultation highlights overall strategies for engaging the public and building community trust, as well as strategies focused specifically on communicating effectively to ensure demand for and promote acceptance of the vaccines. [...] This rapid expert consultation also presents current data about people's motivations, which are informed by perceptions and social norms. These motivations, combined with pragmatic considerations, will determine the uptake of the COVID-19 vaccines."

• Exploring Racial Influences on Flu Vaccine Attitudes and Behavior: Results of a National Survey of African American and White Adults

  From the Abstract: "Racial disparities in adult flu vaccination rates persist with African Americans falling below Whites in vaccine acceptance. Although the literature has examined traditional variables including barriers, access, attitudes, among others, there has been virtually no examination of the extent to which racial factors including racial consciousness, fairness, and discrimination may affect vaccine attitudes and behaviors. [...] We contracted with GfK [Growth from Knowledge] to conduct an online, nationally representative survey with 819 African American and 838 White respondents. Measures included risk perception, trust, vaccine attitudes, hesitancy and confidence, novel measures on racial factors, and vaccine behavior. [...] There were significant racial differences in vaccine attitudes, risk perception, trust, hesitancy and confidence"

• Prince George's County Local Report: CommuniVax Coalition

  From the Executive Summary: "Prince George's County, Maryland is a majority-minority county in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. With more than 62% of the population African American/Black and 20% Latino, the county has a long history of disparities in chronic diseases, HIV, infant mortality, and unequal access to healthcare. Throughout the pandemic, Prince George's County has led Maryland in COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Although, as of July 29, 2021, 50% of Prince George's County residents were fully vaccinated, there were still significant proportions, particularly of the African American population, that have not been vaccinated and remain at grave risk from the Delta and future variants. As of August 2021, the county has returned to the high-risk transmission category with skyrocketing cases. Considering the urgent need to vaccinate those over the age of 12 years who are currently eligible, and prepare to vaccinate younger children, addressing gaps in the vaccination delivery is crucial to ensuring vaccine equity and reducing the disproportionate impact on county residents. Our report is grounded in a rapid ethnographic approach in which we interviewed 22 individual community members and 7 key informants; conducted 3 focus groups; utilized an ongoing environmental scan process; and working with a human-centered design team from Bridgeable, Inc., engaged community members in a human-centered design workshop to identify barriers, co-create solutions, and reimagine a community health campaign sustainable over the next decade."
