  This Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) report discusses the dangers of 1-Bromopropane, a common solvent used in dry cleaning products, solvent sprays, and other products. "1-Bromopropane (1-BP) is a solvent that is used in degreasing, dry cleaning, spray adhesives, and aerosol solvents. Occupational exposure to 1-BP has been linked to neurological illnesses. Animal studies show that 1-BP may also cause cancer and reproductive disorders. Controls and personal protective equipment are available to protect workers from 1-BP exposure." OSHA recommends substituting the product or reducing exposure; use should be coupled with protective clothing, such as gloves and a respirator.

  "The focus of this document is to identify and describe strategies for the engineering control of worker exposure during the production or use of engineered nanomaterials. Engineered nanomaterials are materials that are intentionally produced and have at least one primary dimension less than 100 nanometers (nm). Nanomaterials may have properties different from those of larger particles of the same material, making them unique and desirable for specific product applications. The consumer products market currently has more than 1,000 nanomaterial-containing products including makeup, sunscreen, food storage products, appliances, clothing, electronics, computers, sporting goods, and coatings. As more nanomaterials are introduced into the workplace and nano-enabled products enter the market, it is essential that producers and users of engineered nanomaterials ensure a safe and healthy work environment."

  "Chemicals are a ubiquitous component of the modern workplace. Occupational exposures to chemicals have long been recognized as having the potential to adversely affect the lives and health of workers. Acute or short-term exposures to high concentrations of some airborne chemicals have the ability to quickly overwhelm workers, resulting in a spectrum of undesirable outcomes that may include irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, severe irreversible health effects, impairment of the ability to escape from the exposure environment, and, in extreme cases, death. Airborne concentrations of chemicals capable of causing such adverse health effects or of impeding escape from high-risk conditions may arise from a variety of non-routine workplace situations affecting workers, including special work procedures (e.g., in confined spaces), industrial accidents (e.g., chemical spills or explosions), and chemical releases into the community (e.g., during transportation incidents or other uncontrolled-release scenarios). Since the 1970s, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been responsible for the development of acute exposure guidelines called Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) values, which are intended to characterize these high-risk conditions. Used initially as key components of the 'NIOSH Respirator Selection Logic' [NIOSH 2004], IDLH values are established (1) to ensure that the worker can escape from a given contaminated environment in the event of failure of the respiratory protection equipment and (2) to indicate a maximum level above which only a highly reliable breathing apparatus, providing maximum worker protection, is permitted."

• New Visual Warning System to Reduce Struck-by and Pinning Accidents

  "The objective of this technology is to provide an intervention that reduces the risk of underground mine workers being struck-by or pinned by mobile mining equipment such as the continuous mining machine (CMM). […] Mobile mining equipment poses a significant safety risk to workers who can be accidentally struck-by or pinned by the equipment, resulting in worker injury or death. Because of their severity and frequency, these machine-related accidents are at the forefront of the stakeholder concerns of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident data from 2002--2011 indicates that 44 fatalities and 4,754 nonfatal days lost (NFDL) occurred in the underground coal mining industry and were described as struck-against or struck-by and caught or pinned in-under-between."

In Appendix A of the Alert, NIOSH identified a sample list of major hazardous drugs. The list was compiled from information provided by four institutions that had generated lists of hazardous drugs for their respective institutions, as well as a list from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). The 2004 list was updated in 2010 and 2012. The current update (2014) adds 27 drugs and includes a review of the 2004 list and the consequent removal of 12 drugs that did not meet the NIOSH criteria for hazardous drugs."

  From the Document: "The World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program is a Division in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The WTC Health Program was established when the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 became law in January 2011. The Act continued medical benefits for NYC responders and survivors; expanded benefits to responders in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon; and established an advisory committee and research program. In December 2015, Congress reauthorized the WTC Health Program for 75 years, ending in 2090. The WTC Health Program currently has over 86,000 members of which more than 43,000 members receive care for at least one certified WTC-related health condition."

We found 13 needlestick injuries and 37 additional exposure incidents across a 6-year period. Nine of 11 source persons tested for needlestick injuries were found to have Hepatitis C. The city had a comprehensive bloodborne pathogens exposure control plan, but the police department had not yet adopted it. We recommended improvements to engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls."

The request concerned the health and safety of fire fighters who responded to a fire at a plastics recycling plant on October 1, 2000. On December 11-14, 2000, NIOSH investigators traveled to Madison to conduct an incident and medical evaluation. [...] The investigation revealed the following problems during the fire: staffing shortages, communication problems (radios not working and missed information), material shortages in the Rehab area (air bottles and fluids), procedural deficiencies, lack of a pre-incident plan, and lax observance and enforcement of selfcontained breathing apparatus (SCBA) use. One fire fighter suffered a life-threatening emergency (unresponsive, elevated blood pressure, rapid shallow respirations, and sinus tachycardia) and other fire fighters reported mucous membrane irritation and respiratory symptoms consistent with, but not specific for, exposure to burning plastic. Other than one critical case and three less critical cases, no other fire fighters reported persistent symptoms."

  "In October 2006, NIOSH [National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health] received a management request for an HHE [Health Hazard Evaluation] at the City of Meridian Fire Department in Meridian, Mississippi. The Fire Chief submitted the HHE request because 12 firefighters tested positive for latent tuberculosis [TB] infection from 2005-2006. On October 24-26, 2006, NIOSH medical investigators conducted a site visit. We held an opening conference with management and union representatives to discuss the HHE request. We conducted employee interviews and collected blood samples for TB testing. Individuals were mailed their blood test results on October 31, 2006. A follow-up site visit was conducted on December 11-13, 2006. [...] We recommend two options concerning future tuberculosis screening for Meridian Fire Department firefighters. If management decides to continue annual tuberculosis screening, it should be conducted following CDC guidelines. If management decides to conduct an annual TB risk assessment for department firefighters to determine testing frequency, this assessment should be conducted with the assistance and close cooperation of the State of Mississippi District 6 Tuberculosis Program staff. Management and union officials should emphasize the importance of attending all medical appointments, continue periodic refresher training on tuberculosis and bloodborne pathogens, and incorporate N95 respirator training and fit-testing into their respiratory protection program."

  "In April 1996, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) received a request for a health hazard evaluation (HHE) from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), in Falls Church, Virginia, regarding respiratory hazards associated with fire investigations. ATF trains a select number of special agents as fire investigators as part of the ATF arson enforcement program. These special agents work with counterparts in state and local fire departments to investigate the origin and cause of fires. ATF special agents and local fire investigators in the northern Virginia jurisdictions were concerned about the potential respiratory health effects from conducting fire scene examinations and the adequacy of their respiratory protection. In response to this request, environmental monitoring was performed during the investigation of two house fires on February 12 and 13, 1997, in metropolitan Washington, D.C., and Prince George's County, Maryland, and three staged fires on June 3, 1997, at the Fort Belvoir military base in Alexandria, Virginia. During these fire scene examinations, environmental samples were collected for total and respirable dust, metals, hydrogen cyanide, inorganic acids, aldehydes including formaldehyde, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), elemental carbon, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)."

Specifically, the request was for NIOSH assistance in evaluating a pneumatic reciprocating saw equipped with local exhaust ventilation (LEV) used for cranial openings during forensic autopsies and examinations. The pneumatic saw was being evaluated by the coroner's office as an alternative to an electrically-driven reciprocating saw. The objective of the NIOSH evaluation was to determine if the alternative reciprocating saw (1) generates less tissue and bone fragment aerosol that could potentially challenge the breathing zone of the operating forensic technician, and (2) reduces the noise exposure to the technician and surrounding personnel."

  "In March 1996, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) received a Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) request from the Dartmouth Chief of Police to evaluate lead exposure during firearms training. Although no adverse health effects had been reported, some of the officers were concerned about potential lead exposure in the indoor range. Police from Dartmouth, New Bedford, and nearby towns, conduct firearms training at an outdoor range that is owned and operated by the New Bedford Police Department. Within the past year, an indoor facility was added to the range for providing instruction in night firing and fire/no-fire decision making. The facility is located in an old, unrenovated office trailer which was moved onto the site. Inside the trailer, audiovisual equipment is used to project a variety of scenarios that could be encountered by police officers. During training, officers fire at the video images, and the bullets pass through the end of the trailer and into a dirt berm."

  "During the last six months of 1996, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted an evaluation of United States Marshals Service (USMS) employees' exposures to electromagnetic fields (EMF) while operating walk-through and hand-held metal detectors at various United States courthouses. These evaluations were performed in response to a USMS management request, which NIOSH received on March 14, 1996, to evaluate occupational exposure to EMF generated by metal detectors used in security screening procedures. No medically confirmed reports of health effects were cited in the request. The results of measurements performed on 52 different walk-through metal detectors indicate that USMS personnel who work in the close proximity to these units, under normal operating conditions, are not exposed to magnetic field levels in the sub-radiofrequency regions in excess of occupational guidelines promulgated by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). All measurements made on hand-held metal detectors were also below the same occupational guidelines."

  "On August 12, 1994, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) received a confidential request for a Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Tampa, Florida, from three employees working in the Communication Center. The employees were concerned that poor ventilation and possible exposure to mold and mildew were causing respiratory symptoms, headaches, and fatigue. NIOSH investigators conducted a site visit on January 4-6, 1995. During the site visit environmental measurements were taken, 26 employees (selected either by the requestors or randomly from employees at work on the day of the evaluation) were interviewed, and a questionnaire was administered to 77 employees of the Communication Center."

  "On April 16, 1991, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) received a request for a health hazard evaluation from the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), on behalf of fire fighters from the Jersey City Fire Department (JCFD), to assess the health and safety practices used during a response to a fire at an illegal dumpsite on April 10-12, 1991, in Jersey City, New Jersey. The IAFF reported that over 300 fire fighters and other response personnel were involved in the incident and that approximately 90 had reported chemical exposure injuries."

  "On May 16, 1991, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) received a request for a health hazard evaluation (HHE) from the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), on behalf of members in the Clark County, Nevada, and the City of Henderson, Nevada, fire departments. Fire fighters in these departments responded on May 6, 1991, to a chlorine leak at the Pioneer Chlor Alkali plant located just outside the Henderson city limits. The IAFF reported that several fire fighters who responded to this incident had developed respiratory symptoms that they attributed to chlorine exposure"

  "On February 23-24, 1994, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a health hazard evaluation (HHE) at the Dauphin County Prison in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to evaluate possible health problems related to working in a specific area of the prison. The health problems listed in the request included rash, elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, headache, and throat irritation. The medical portion of the HHE consisted of reviewing medical records for 17 employees, interviewing 30 employees, and examining the skin of three workers. The industrial hygiene evaluation consisted of: a visual inspection of accessible parts of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, the collection of bulk samples from the HVAC interior acoustical lining for microbial content analysis, and the measurement of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentration, temperature (T), and relative humidity (RH)."
