Explore Terms: A Glossary of Common Cybersecurity Terminology
"The NICCS [National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies] Portal's cybersecurity lexicon is intended to serve the cybersecurity communities of practice and interest for both the public and private sectors. It complements other lexicons such as the NISTIR [National Institute of Standards and Technology Internal Reports] 7298 Glossary of Key Information Security Terms. Objectives for lexicon are to enable clearer communication and common understanding of cybersecurity terms, through use of plain English and annotations on the definitions. The lexicon will evolve through ongoing feedback from end users and stakeholders."

National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education: Strategic Plan
"Released in 2009, the 'Cyberspace Policy Review: Assuring a Trusted and Resilient Information and Communications Infrastructure' acknowledged the need for cybersecurity public awareness and an advanced cybersecurity workforce. To address these needs, the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) developed 11 initiatives to help secure the United States in cyberspace. The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) was established to lead the work on the goals outlined in Initiative 8, which addresses the Nation's cybersecurity needs related to public awareness, education, professional development, and talent management. In the past 20 years, the innovative use of cyberspace has transformed the day-to-day operations of the Nation. These advances have enhanced the lives of individuals, business, and government in profound ways. From eCommerce, to mobile communications and complex networked systems, the rapidly growing dependence on cyberspace is evident. In the years to come, the Nation's dependence on cyberspace will only increase as technology advances and will further integrate into our daily lives."

2012 Information Technology Workforce Assessment for Cybersecurity (ITWAC): Summary Report
"The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) partnered with the Federal Chief Information Officer's (CIO) Council to develop and distribute the 2012 Information Technology Workforce Assessment for Cybersecurity (ITWAC). NICE evolved from the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) Initiative 8- Expand Cyber Education, to develop a technologically-skilled and cyber-savvy workforce with the right knowledge and skills. The ITWAC was developed to collect workforce data that would help identify the composition and capabilities of the federal civilian cybersecurity workforce. The assessment can help federal departments and agencies: 1) Understand the scope of the cybersecurity workforce pipeline; 2) Establish a baseline of current cybersecurity capabilities and proficiencies among the Federal workforce; and 3) Identify the general training needs of the cybersecurity workforce. The ITWAC is similar to the 2011 Information Technology Workforce Capability Assessment (ITWCA), conducted by the Federal CIO Council, and is largely based on the National Cybersecurity Workforce Framework (the Framework). The Framework was developed by NICE using existing cybersecurity research, such as the Federal CIO Council Matrix Project."
