'Arab Spring': Investing in Durable Peace
"The purpose of this White Paper is to offer a strategic analysis that could form the basis of the U.S. Army's engagement strategy in response to the 'Arab Spring.' To help appreciate the complexities of the rapidly unfolding events and the type of engagement required, the strategic direction proposed is presented against the background of pre-Arab Spring U.S. policy and Army engagement in the Middle East and North Africa."

Jihadi Discourse in the Wake of the Arab Spring
"This report analyzes jihadi discourse in the wake of the 'Arab Spring' in order to address two related questions: (1) why have global jihadi leaders been struggling to advance a coherent and effective response to the events of the Arab Spring, and (2) why, despite strong rhetoric of militancy, have we witnessed little action on the part of new jihadi groups that have emerged in countries that underwent regime change (i.e., Tunisia, Egypt and Libya) as a result of the Arab Spring? To answer these questions, this study focuses on original Arabic sources in the form of public statements released by global jihadi leaders in response to the Arab Spring and by new groups projecting a jihadi worldview that have emerged in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Regional jihadi groups that were established prior to the Arab Spring are not the focus of this study. This study reveals that global jihadi leaders are struggling to define clearly and consistently their ideological framework in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. More precisely, the factors that are causing the current ideological incoherence of jihadism are the same factors that had once served as the cornerstone of its plausibility in the eyes of its adherents."

Beware of Imitators: al-Qa`ida Through the Lens of its Confidential Secretary
This report "consists of three chapters and a concluding section. The opening chapter is an account of Harun's journey as an al-Qa`ida operative as he presents himself; it is also a discussion of the merits and shortcomings of the manuscript in providing reliable information about al-Qa`ida's activities. The remaining parts of the report focus on two aspects that feature prominently in Harun's account of al-Qa`ida: the first pertains to al-Qa`ida's ideology and the second to its organizational structure."

Group That Calls Itself a State: Understanding the Evolution and Challenges of the Islamic State
From the Executive Summary: "The Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) has a history of studying insurgent and terrorist organizations operating out of Iraq. This report, which examines the rise, activities, and weaknesses of the group that calls itself the 'Islamic State' (IS), is a continuation of that effort. Leveraging unique data sources, including the group's own material from captured documents as well as online postings, this report explores the IS as a multi-faceted organization that engages in a wide range of activities, has suffered setbacks, has undergone adaptations, and continues to exhibit weaknesses."

Letters from Abbottabad: Bin Ladin Sidelined?
"This report is a study of 17 declassified documents captured during the Abbottabad raid and released to the Combating Terrorism Center (CTC). They consist of electronic letters or draft letters, totaling 175 pages in the original Arabic and 197 pages in the English translation. The earliest is dated September 2006 and the latest April 2011. Some of the letters are incomplete and/or are missing their dates, and not all of the letters explicitly attribute their author(s) and/or indicate the addressee. In addition to Bin Ladin, the recognizable individuals who appear in the letters either as authors or as recipients are `Atiyyatullah and Abu Yahya al-Libi, both of whom are al-Qa`ida leaders; Adam Yahya Gadahn, the American al-Qa`ida spokesman and media advisor; Mukhtar Abu al-Zubayr, the leader of the Somali militant group Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahidin; Abu Basir (Nasir al-Wuhayshi), the leader of the Yemen-based al-Qa`ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP); and Hakimullah Mahsud, the leader of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Given the small collection of documents released to the CTC, it is impossible to construct a coherent evolution of al-Qa`ida or its current state. 'Letters from Abbottabad' is an initial exploration and contextualization of 17 documents that will be the grist for future academic debate and discussion."
