"The problem is that the Olathe Fire Department does not have an administrative policy guide (APG) to address the use of social media. The purpose of this research was to create a social media policy that defines the suitable application of social media for the department. Action research was used to discuss the following questions: (1) How are other public and private organizations using social media; (2) What information do other public and private organizations consider suitable or appropriate in regard to social media use; (3) What is the risk-benefit of social media to the department; and (4) How are other public and private organizations regulating the use of social media? The procedures employed included extensive literature review, policy review of public and private organizations, personal interviews and a survey (Appendix A) completed by public and private organizations. The results illustrated the department's need for a social media policy that is consistent with best practices. The recommendation is for the approval, of the draft department social media policy, to help manage organizational risk and enhance communications."
"The problem is that Santa Barbara Estates, a mobile housing community, does not have a tornado shelter for its residents. The purpose of this project was to conduct a tornado shelter needs assessment for Santa Barbara Estates. Descriptive research was used to discuss the research questions (1) how are other communities using tornado shelters? (2) what is the likelihood of a tornadic event in Olathe? (3) what is the risk-benefit of tornado shelters? The procedures included extensive literature review; personal interviews and correspondence; and, a survey (Appendix A) completed by emergency and non-emergency service professionals. The results illustrated the need for personal preparedness and tornado shelter for residents of Santa Barbara Estates. The recommendations were for the creation of a formal severe weather plan at Santa Babara Estates; the crafting of a new resident guide to include personal preparedness information for Santa Barbara Estates residents; the encouraged use of NOAA [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] weather radio by residents of Santa Barbara Estates; the presentation of a disaster preparedness course to Santa Barbara Estates staff and residents; and the construction of appropriate shelter on the property of Santa Barbara Estates. Future readers should conduct a shelter needs assessment for communities and target populations, such as mobile home residents, that are at greater risk for injury or death related to tornado events."
