From the Highlights: "[1] WHO [World Health Organization] has published a new guidance on Considerations for school-related public health measures in the context of COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] as an annex to earlier guidance on adjusting public health and social measures published on 15 April 2020. [2] WHO has issued a Statement on Tobacco use and COVID-19. Tobacco smoking is a known risk factor for many respiratory infections and increases the severity of respiratory diseases. A review of studies by public health experts convened by WHO found that smokers are more likely to develop severe disease with COVID-19, compared to non-smokers. WHO urges researchers, scientists and the media to be cautious about amplifying unproven claims that tobacco or nicotine could reduce the risk of COVID-19. [3] The Director-General Dr. Tedros in his media briefing yesterday, urged a slow, steady, lifting of public health and social measures (so called lockdowns), which is key to stimulating economies, while also keeping a vigilant eye on the virus so that control measures can be quickly implemented if an upswing in cases is identified."

The hub is designed as a central repository of quality public health information, guidance, tools and webinars which can be accessed freely at any point. [2] WHO [World Health Organization] Director-General Dr. Tedros, in his regular media briefing yesterday, cautioned that 'we have a long way to go. This virus will be with us for a long time'. He added that 'the world cannot go back to the way things were. There must be a 'new normal' - a world that is healthier, safer and better prepared'. [...3] WHO has published guidance 'Addressing Human Rights as Key to the COVID-19 Response'. The guidance document highlights the importance of integrating a human rights-based approach into the COVID-19 response and highlights key considerations in relation to addressing stigma and discrimination, prevention of violence against women, support for vulnerable populations, quarantine and restrictive measures, and shortages of supplies and equipment. [4] All available evidence for COVID-19 suggests that SARS-CoV-2 [severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2] has a zoonotic source. Many researchers have been able to look at the genomic features of SARS-CoV-2 and have found that evidence does not support that SARS-CoV-2 is a laboratory construct. A constructed virus would show a mix of known elements within genomic sequences - this is not the case."

[2] WHO [World Health Organization] Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in his media briefing yesterday, thanked health ministers from the G20 [Group of Twenty] countries for their support, as well as the support received from the G77 [Group of 77] (that comprises 135 countries) and The Non-Aligned Movement (that comprises over 130 countries). It has also raised US$55 million for WHO's Solidarity Response Fund, which will be used to support countries to prevent, detect, and respond to the pandemic. [4] As of 21 April, over 100 countries have joined the Solidarity Trial to evaluate therapeutics for COVID-19. The trial will compare four treatment options against local standard of care, to assess their relative effectiveness against COVID-19."

Following this review, the total number of cases in Wuhan increased by 325 and the total number of deaths increased by 1290. [6] As of 11 April 2020, 167 countries, territories and areas have implemented additional health measures that significantly interfere with international traffic."

[2] There is no evidence that the Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine (BCG) protects people against infection with COVID-19 virus. Two clinical trials addressing this question are underway, and WHO [World Health Organization] will evaluate the evidence when it is available. In the absence of evidence, WHO does not recommend BCG vaccination for the prevention of COVID-19."
