From the Highlights: "[1] WHO [World Health Organization] experts will travel to China to work together with their Chinese counterparts to prepare scientific plans for identifying the zoonotic source of the SARS-COV-2 virus. The experts will develop the scope and terms of reference for a WHO-led international mission. [2] WHO has delivered $1.6 million worth of essential COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] medical supplies and equipment to Afghanistan, a country with a health system facing severe challenges. The shipment, amounting to a total of 9.5 tons, includes personal protective equipment, PCR [polymerase chain reaction] machines, oxygen concentrator machines, and stretchers, as well as other equipment. It will bolster efforts to keep frontline medical staff safe and improve testing capacity in the country. [3] Burkina Faso has resumed polio vaccination campaigns under strict COVID-19 prevention measures. 'We cannot wait for the COVID-19 pandemic to be contained to resume immunization activities.' said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa."

From the Highlights: "[1] WHO [World Health Organization] encourages Member States to invest in and build longer-term health emergency preparedness during the COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] pandemic. To support this goal, WHO has published guidance that maps COVID-19 preparedness and response actions; locates relevant supporting WHO resources; and advocates for the conscious and effective allocation of COVID-19 funds to also meet countries' longer-term needs. [2] A WHO survey has found that access to HIV medicines has been severely impacted by COVID-19. Seventy-three countries have warned that they are at risk of stock-outs of antiretroviral (ARV) medicines as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the survey conducted ahead of the International AIDS Society's biannual conference. [3] The WHO Regional Office for America urges countries to continue the fight against malaria during the COVID19 pandemic, especially among vulnerable communities. In the Americas, 138 million people live in areas at risk of malaria, and some 765 000 cases and around 340 deaths were reported in 2018."

Kluge addressed the European Parliament Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety on the global response to COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019]. 'The EU is in a unique position to provide global leadership in defining the 'new normal' as part of the global recovery,' Dr Tedros said, though he cautioned parliamentarians that, globally, the situation 'is still getting worse.' The Regional Officer for the Americas/PAHO [Pan American Health Organization] has released a report that presents an overview of PAHO's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also provides an analysis of the epidemiological situation in the Americas and the impact of the spread of the virus on health systems in Latin America and the Caribbean. From the Highlights: "[1] WHO [World Health Organization] Director-General Dr Tedros has emphasized the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to responding to the pandemic -- 'Not testing alone. Not physical distancing alone. Not contact tracing alone. Not masks alone. Do it all', he said during yesterday's regular media briefing. [2] In Turkey, a WHO-backed helpline has been created to provide psychosocial health support to persons affected by mental health issues in the wake of COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019]. The helpline reaches all of Turkey's 81 provinces, and has provided over 80 000 consultations since March 2020. [3] While countries have had to de-prioritise non-urgent care to make way for COVID-19 patients, maternal and child health is one area that cannot be put on hold. In the WHO European region, examples from Italy, Germany and Israel show that swift recalibration of healthcare has helped maintain essential services, thereby protecting the well-being of pregnant women and their babies. [4] The WHO Regional Director for the Americas, Dr Carissa F. Etienne, said countries planning to relax public health measures must take a phased approach based on local conditions and be prepared to impose preventive measures again if the epidemiological situation changes. From the Highlights: "It has never been clearer that communication is an important public health intervention that contributes to controlling pandemics. The WHO [World Health Organization] Regional Office for Europe discusses this and the risks of an 'infodemic' - an overabundance of information, some of which can be misleading or even harmful. WHO launched the first Infodemiology conference on 29 June, which includes talks with experts on how the infodemic affects the world and reflections on how it can be managed. Cambodia has been responding to a measles outbreak at the same time as the COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] outbreak. WHO has supported efforts for routine immunization in Cambodia at health care facilities, and in the community through outreach teams. WHO has published an update to the scientific brief on smoking and COVID-19, which assesses the available evidence on the risk of smokers being infected by the virus, severity of disease, and deaths among hospitalized COVID-19 patients who smoke. The conclusion remains that smoking appears associated with increased severity of disease and death in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. From the Highlights: "[1] Yemen is the world's worst humanitarian emergency and the already vulnerable people of Yemen are facing the added threat of COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019]. This new burden on medical facilities could result in a catastrophic death toll. WHO [World Health Organization] and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre have joined forces to ensure access to healthcare for the vulnerable in remote areas through the provision of a minimum service package. [2] UNICEF [ United Nations Children's Fund] and WHO have supported a national immunization campaign in Syria amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been about a 5% reduction in vaccination coverage in the first half of 2020, mainly as a result of challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 5-day immunization campaign, implemented by the Syrian Ministry of Health, health workers checked the vaccination status of more than 900 000 children and vaccinated more than 210 100 children. [3] To promote community empowerment and trust, a 'Global Risk Communication and Community Engagement Collective Service' has been launched."

From the Highlights: "Today we report a record number of new cases in the last 24 hours globally (189 077 cases), with several countries reporting their highest number of new cases in a 24-hour period. As Dr Tedros remarked in his media briefing on 24 June, '(E)ven as we continue research into vaccines and therapeutics we have an urgent responsibility to do everything we can with the tools we have now to suppress transmission and save lives.' WHO [World Health Organization] has recently updated guidance on critical actions countries can take. Planes carrying more than 4.7 million items of personal protective equipment, procured by WHO/Europe with funding from the European Union, have landed in Azerbaijan, Belarus and Ukraine over the last two days.The essential protective equipment will help health-care workers in the three countries respond effectively and safely to the COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] pandemic. The phenomenon of an 'infodemic' has escalated to a level that requires a coordinated response. An infodemic is an overabundance of information-some accurate and some not-occurring during an epidemic. WHO is holding its first Infodemiology Conference, with a public conference on 29 June followed by a scientific conference from 30 June through16 July."

From the Highlights: "The Access to COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] Tools (ACT) Accelerator is a global initiative between multiple partners to ensure equitable access to life-saving tools for COVID-19. WHO has published the ACT-Accelerator Investment Case, which provides an overview of the ACT-Accelerator, its goals, and the investments that are required to carry out its mission. WHO [World Health Organization] Director-General Dr Tedros emphasized that 'vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics are vital tools - but to be truly effective they must be administered with another essential ingredient, which is solidarity'. WHO has published interim guidance on rapid hospital readiness and an accompanying checklist tool, which can be used to monitor the development of operational readiness capacity in hospitals and identify gaps that require investment and action. The checklist covers hospital governance, structures, plans and protocols to rapidly determine the current capacities of hospitals to respond to COVID-19. WHO has published interim guidance on biomedical equipment for COVID-19 case management and an accompanying inventory tool, which countries can use to collect in-depth facility inventories of biomedical equipment re-allocation, procurement and planning for COVID-19 case management. The tool is intended for use from the early stages of an emergency to early recovery."

From the Highlights: "On 25 June, Health Minister Jens Spahn of Germany, and Solidarity and Health Minister Olivier Veran of France, visited WHO [World Health Organization] headquarters. During a press briefing they expressed their solidarity and additional support to both COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] response and WHO's core programmes. Yesterday the Ebola virus disease outbreak in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was declared over after nearly two years. The WHO Regional Office for Africa and partners are now building on the Ebola response to tackle COVID-19 in the country. Additionally, WHO is supporting other countries in Africa as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates in the region. In a press briefing yesterday, Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, spoke about COVID-19 in the region and how digital technology and artificial intelligence can empower people and play a leading role in optimizing efforts to control transmission of the disease. From the Highlights: "Speaking at the 24 June media briefing on COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019], the Director-General highlighted work by WHO [World Health Organization] and UN partners to ensure global supplies of oxygen for treating patients, and discussed the difficult choices all countries must make in holding gatherings of large numbers of people. The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo today declared the end of the country's 10th outbreak of Ebola virus disease. Many of the public health measures that have been successful in stopping Ebola remaining essential for suppressing COVID-19. Healthcare workers trained in clinical management, and infection prevention and control, as part of the Ebola response are redeploying to fight COVID-19. As cases of COVID-19 in the Americas remain high, WHO's Regional Director for the Americas, Dr Carissa F. Etienne cautioned that 'We must be realistic about the future: all of us must adjust to a new way of life and redefine our sense of normal.' From the Highlights: "With influenza season starting in the southern hemisphere, WHO [World Health Organization] has alerted countries to maintain vigilance for influenza and prepare for the upcoming influenza season during the COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] pandemic. WHO recommends that countries optimize the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) for both influenza and COVID-19 sentinel surveillance. Countries are urged to (i) sustain influenza surveillance, (ii) report surveillance data to WHO FluNet and FluID or through regional platforms, (iii) send representative viruses to WHO Collaborating Centres of GISRS without delay, and (iv) maintain influenza vaccination programs according to WHO guidance. A team of public health experts has been deployed to Tajikistan through the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN). The team will provide support to strengthen disease surveillance and laboratory testing to complement ongoing work by the COVID-19 response team in Tajikistan. WHO and collaborating agencies provided support to health authorities in Uzbekistan to assess their options for COVID-19 testing and identify potential resources in-country to increase their laboratory capacity. A nurse who is a refugee from Syria shared his experience as a COVID-19 responder in Turkey. His daily activities as part of the contact tracing team are 'actively preventing the spread of the disease within communities, thereby protecting the health of hundreds of people'."

From the Highlights: "The WHO [World Health Organization] Regional Director for Europe, Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, shared that the European Region accounts for 31% of COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] cases and 43% of COVID-19 deaths globally. Dr Kluge highlighted that several countries continue to face increasing disease incidence and that 'Preparing for the autumn is a priority now at the WHO Regional Office for Europe'. The WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari, has released a statement on COVID-19. He highlighted that while there is a wide body of research on COVID-19, many things are still unknown. He reiterated that as knowledge of the disease evolves, recommendations about how best to control the pandemic are also evolving. A survey conducted by the WHO Regional Office for the Americas highlight that services for the prevention and treatment of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have been critically affected since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Region. Oman has launched some of the most powerful technological solutions deployed to date in the Middle East to track the movement and spread of COVID-19 and ensure patient compliance with isolation measures, in an effort to contain the disease in the country."

From the Highlights: "[1] WHO [World Health Organization] Director-General Dr Tedros, in his regular media briefing yesterday, highlighted that today is World Refugee Day and highlighted the risks of COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] for some of the world's most vulnerable people. He also stressed the shared duty to do everything we can to prevent, detect and respond to transmission of COVID-19 among refugee populations. [2] WHO has published 'Criteria for releasing COVID-19 patients from isolation' which provides an update to previous guidance. The updated criteria reflect recent findings that patients whose symptoms have resolved may still test positive for the COVID-19 virus for many weeks. Despite this positive test result, these patients are not likely to be infectious and therefore are unlikely to be able to transmit the virus to another person. [3] WHO has published an Emergency Global Supply Chain System (COVID-19) catalogue. This catalogue lists all medical devices, including personal protective equipment, medical equipment, medical consumables, single use devices, laboratory and test-related devices that may be requested through the COVID-19 Supply Portal."

From the Highlights: "[1] The investigation of a cluster of COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] cases in Beijing associated with a wholesale market continues. As of 18 June, 10AM CEST [Central European Summer Time], Chinese authorities have reported a total of 172 cases since 11 June, including 158 in Beijing, 10 linked cases in Hebei Province, 2 in Liaoning Province, 1 in Sichuan Province and 1 in Zhejiang Province. Three genetic sequences related to Xinfadi cluster have been uploaded to the GISAID database. WHO [World Health Organization] is closely monitoring the situation and is in close contact with national authorities in China. [2] Chile has reported 36 179 cases in last 24 hours. Of these 36 179 cases, 4 757 correspond to new cases and the remaining 31 422 cases were added by the national authorities following data reconciliation activity. From the Highlights: "[1] WHO [World Health Organization] welcomes initial clinical trial results from the United Kingdom that show dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, can be lifesaving for patients who are critically ill with COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019]. According to preliminary findings shared with WHO, for patients on ventilators, the treatment was shown to reduce mortality by about one third, and for patients who only require oxygen, mortality was cut by about one fifth. [2] Older people have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders from around the world have expressed their concern, and called for a response that addresses the needs and rights of older people. [3] Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, Director of the WHO Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO), has called on countries to 'work together to strengthen the health response within their territories and across frontiers,' in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 among migrant and vulnerable populations in border areas.
