The nation shares borders with two global epicenters of the pandemic - Iran and China. Pakistan reacted with alarm when the first case was confirmed on 26 February. Quarantine facilities were established in each of the subnational units and Sindh became the first province to shut down all educational institutions on 1 March. In addition to the health challenges faced by all countries, Pakistan is facing an acute challenge in maintaining the livelihood of daily subsistence workers in the informal economy given that a lockdown has now been imposed by federal government until the end of April."

What started off as a flu-like illness in one person in one corner of the world, has changed the lives, livelihoods and futures of billions. Australia saw its first case on January 25 and now has over 6,600 cases, the country is in partial lockdown, schools and universities have left their campuses, hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost. Fortunately, the tide appears to be turning and we can start thinking of Recovery. In the early stages of an infectious disease outbreak such as the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), there is frequent uncertainty about the nature of the disease, its spread, scope, and impact. This often leads to emotional distress, even among those who have not been directly exposed to the disease. Common psychological and behavioral responses include distress reactions (insomnia, anxiety, decreased perception of safety, anger, scapegoating, and increased presentation to healthcare due to fears of illness), health risk behaviors (increased use of alcohol and tobacco, altered work/life balance, social isolation, increased family conflict, and violence). Children and adolescents may also become distressed, which can manifest in 'misbehaviors', social isolation, or diminished academic performance. A minority of individuals will develop disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress, that require formal treatment."

Exposure to human remains can be stressful, but the guidelines below will help you manage your stress and increase adaptive coping. The guidelines are applicable to inexperienced and experienced mortuary personnel, medical staff, first responders, military service members, and those planning for current or upcoming mortuary operations. In your work, you may see, smell, and handle the remains of individuals of all ages. Working with or around remains may arouse strong feelings of pity, horror, repulsion, disgust, and anger at the senselessness of this tragedy. You may feel guilty for not helping enough. These reactions are normal and a part of being human. You may feel emotionally numb, or you may even use 'graveyard humor' to make the suffering and death less terrible. These are also normal responses. Strong emotions or reactions may be most painful when working with the remains of children, or when the remains remind you of someone you know or of yourself."
