ADA Design Requirements for Accessible Egress
"The ADA covers a wide variety of facilities, including places of public accommodation, commercial facilities, and state and local government facilities. The Board's ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), which primarily cover new construction and alterations, include specifications for accessible means of egress, emergency alarms, and signage. Model building codes, life safety codes, and state access codes also address these and other elements related to emergency egress. ADAAG's criteria for accessible means of egress, like those in other building requirements, address both the required number and the technical specifications. The minimum number of egress routes required to be accessible is based on life safety code requirements for means of egress. Most of the criteria for accessible routes, such as width and the treatment of elevation changes, are applied to accessible means of egress to ensure access for persons with disabilities, including those with mobility impairments. Multi-story buildings pose a particular challenge to accessible means of egress since elevators, the standard means of access between floors, are typically taken out of service in emergencies for safety purposes. ADAAG addresses this situation through requirements for areas of rescue assistance or horizontal exits. Evacuation elevators, which are recognized by the model building codes but not the current ADAAG, offer an additional solution."

Canadian Defense Policy - A Breath of Fresh Air
"Canada and the United States closely cooperated in most security issues during the 20th century. In recent years, however, security relations between Canada and the United States have become strained, mainly due to disagreements on the methods used by the United States in prosecuting the Global War on Terror. The first policy issue was the Canadian government's decision to decrease security resources significantly in the wake of the Cold War. The second issue centers on Canada's disagreement concerning Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, as well as other U.S. policy decisions such as the use of Guantanamo Bay."

Uppsala Conflict Data Program [website]
"The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) collects information on a large number of aspects of armed violence since 1946. Since the 1970s, the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts. This effort continues to the present day, now coupled with the collection of information on an ever broadening scope of aspects pertaining to organised violence, such as the resolution and dynamics of conflict. The UCDP data is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied. Data on armed conflicts have been published yearly in the report series States in Armed Conflict (1987-2012), in the SIPRI Yearbook since 1988, the Journal of Peace Research since 1993 and in the Human Security Reports since 2005. In addition UCDP researchers conduct theoretically and empirically based analyses of armed conflict: its causes, escalation, spread, prevention and resolution. These studies are regularly featured in international journals and books."

Sample After Action Report, Appendix D
"Homeland security preparedness involves a cycle of outreach, planning, capability development, training, exercising, evaluation, and improvement. Successful exercises lead to an ongoing program of process improvements. This report is intended to assist agencies striving for preparedness excellence by analyzing exercise results and: Identifying strengths to be maintained and built upon; identifying potential areas for further improvement; and recommending exercise follow-up actions. The suggested actions in this report should be viewed as recommendations only. In some cases, agencies may determine that the benefits of implementation are insufficient to outweigh the costs. In other cases, agencies may identify alternative solutions that are more effective or efficient. Each agency should review the recommendations and determine the most appropriate action and the resources needed (time, staff, funds) for implementation."

Biometric Authentication Technology: From the Movies to Your Desktop
"Recent advances in biometric technology have resulted in increased accuracy at reduced costs, biometric technologies are positioning themselves as the foundation for many highly secure identification and personal verification solutions. Today's biometric solutions provide a means to achieve fast, user-friendly authentication with a high level of accuracy and cost savings. Many areas will benefit from biometric technologies. Highly secure and trustworthy electronic commerce, for example, will be essential to the healthy growth of the global Internet economy. Many biometric technology providers are already delivering biometric authentication for a variety of web-based and client/server based applications to meet these and other needs. Continued improvements in technology will bring increased performance at a lower cost. Interest in biometrics is growing substantially. Evidence of the growing acceptance of biometrics is the availability in the marketplace of biometric-based authentication solutions that are becoming more accurate, less expensive, faster and easy to use. The Biometric Consortium, NIST and NSA are supporting this growth. While biometric authentication is not a magical solution that solves all authentication concerns, it will make it easier and cheaper for you to use a variety of automated information systems even if you're not a secret agent."

Implementation Guidelines for Executive Order 13728 Wildland-Urban Interface Federal Risk Management
From the Scope of Executive Order: "The Wildland-Urban Interface [WUI] Federal Risk Mitigation EO [Executive Order] provides the basis for policy to strengthen the security and resilience of the Nation against wildfire, and to promote public safety, economic strength, and national security. In addition to the increased risk of wildfire due to the changing climate, the wildland-urban interface is growing as the number of houses and communities built in the WUI has steadily increased. The term WUI refers to the line, area, or zone where structures or development meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuels. Even without direct contact from a fire, wind-blown embers from wildfires can travel over a mile and ignite building components and debris on and around a structure. As directed by the EO, these implementation guidelines shall be developed by January 18, 2017 (within 240 days of the date of this order). The implementation guidelines support the Mitigation Framework Leadership Group (MitFLG) goals of providing assistance to the agencies in interpreting the code requirements as outlined in the executive order."

Missouri Department of Public Safety: Office of Homeland Security [website]
This website contains information on emergency preparedness specific to the State of Missouri, including the State homeland security strategy. "A safe and secure Missouri is one of the most basic building blocks upon which our state's future rests. To ensure security, the Missouri Office of Homeland Security was established on September 26, 2001. Missouri was the first state in the nation to create an Office of Homeland Security in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Executive Order 05-20 was signed on July 21, 2005, moving the Missouri Office of Homeland Security to the Missouri Department of Public Safety. Placing the office here has allowed for better coordination between the Department of Public Safety agencies that do much of the daily work that makes up homeland security, such as the State Emergency Management Agency and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. In the same executive order, the Homeland Security Advisory Council was established to review state and local security plans and grant funding requests and make recommendations for changes to better protect Missourians. The Homeland Security Advisory Council was designed to be comprised of the director of the Department of Public Safety and relevant Public Safety division directors and, equally as important, directors of other state departments. This ensures a statewide focus for homeland security and an effective means for coordination of resources."

American Institute of Architects (AIA): Resilience and Adaptation Initiative
About the American Institute of Architect's (AIA's) resilience and adaptation initiative: "Resilient and adaptable communities are better able to withstand shocks and stresses, acute and chronic threats posed by natural and man-made disasters, climate change, degradation of natural resources and population growth. Communities that have integrated intervention plans in place before problems arise or undesirable changes take hold have the key to ensuring a resilient community. That's why we support preparedness, mitigation, response, recovery, and adaptation."
