From the Executive Summary: "Advanced vehicle technologies, which encompass increasing degrees of vehicle automation and connectivity, have created the possibility of a catastrophic impact from the exploitation of automotive cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Thus, a closer look at the potential risks associated with advanced vehicle technologies is needed to inform risk management approaches in both the private and public sectors with regard to the threats, vulnerabilities, and potential consequences of exploitation of vehicle cybersecurity vulnerabilities. It is important to understand how different parts of the complex automotive ecosystem conceptualize cybersecurity risks, and the factors governing the presentation and management of these risks. Our research identified six categories of risk, or risk areas, shown below. As categories, none of these are unique to the automotive industry. However, within each category, the nature of the automotive industry, its technologies, and its operating environment do provide unique challenges that manifest as cybersecurity risks to vehicles and particular to the automotive sector."
