ABSTRACT

Climate Indicators for Agriculture   [open pdf - 22MB]

From the Introduction and Background: "Agriculture is a multibillion-dollar industry in the United States; agricultural commodities are among the most important of the Nation's exports and a significant source of support for rural economies across the country. U.S. farm output amounted to $132.8 billion as of 2017, contributing to a total of $1.053 trillion of national Gross Domestic Product and 11 percent of employment when derivative industries (e.g., food services, textile production) are considered (USDA ERS [U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service] 2019c). Yet, because many types of agricultural production are practiced in myriad ways across the United States, specific and local information is foundational for supporting effective decision-making by farmers, livestock producers, and other land managers."
