Before any Americans died of COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019], NewsGuard analysts noticed an alarming increase in false and misleading content about the disease, its origin, and potential 'cures.' The World Health Organization called this problem an 'infodemic,' as citizens globally are exposed to 'an over-abundance of information - some accurate and some not - that makes it hard for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when they need it.'
