From the opening statement of Ron de Lugo: "This is the second hearing of the Subcommittee on Insular and International Affairs on the resolution sponsored by our colleague Jose Serrano to declare that the people of Puerto Rico have the right to determine the island's future political status. We held the first hearing on July 13 when we heard from three Members of Congress in addition to Representative Serrano. We also heard from representatives of Puerto Rico's Governor and three major status-based political parties, including other leaders on the status issue in that commonwealth, and Puerto Ricans from the States as well. The Office of the President is responsible for Puerto Rican status matters within the Executive Branch, and we will hold a third hearing after its proposed witness on the resolution-the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel-takes office."
