This is the October 10, 1995 hearing on "Nuclear Waste Policy Act Amendment," held before the U.S. House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Lands of the Committee on Resources. From the opening statement of James V. Hansen: "The issue of nuclear waste disposal is one which we in the West have a high degree of sensitivity to and concern about. [...] Our purpose today is to hear from those at the Federal, State and local level that would be impacted by a proposal that I intend to offer at a markup later this week. That proposal would redirect the rail route for delivery of nuclear material away from the Las Vegas Valley as designated in H.R. 1020 as introduced and travel north from Caliente, Nevada, around the test site and on to a location for an interim facility near the Yucca Mountain site. Also, the bill would allow for a heavy haul truck route for a period of five years while the rail route is being constructed." Statements, letters, and materials submitted for the record include those of the following: Yvonne Culverwell, Daniel Dreyfus, Lorraine Hunt, Mark James, Sue Lowden, Cameron McRae, Kevin Phillips, Jack Regan, Maitland Sharpe, and Edward Wright."
