ABSTRACT

Congressional Budget Office Cost Estimate: H.R. 3317, Stopping Abusive Female Exploitation Act   [open pdf - 83KB]

"H.R. 3317 would increase the maximum prison sentence for female genital mutilation from 5 years to 15 years. As a result, new offenders could face longer prison sentences. CBO [Congressional Budget Office] expects that any costs to the federal prison system resulting from longer sentences would be incurred after 2022. Because the number of such cases is small, CBO estimates that implementing the bill would cost less than $500,000 over the 2022-2027 period; any such spending would be subject to the availability of appropriated funds."
