"On October 25, 1998, Hurricane Mitch, the fourth most intense Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record, slammed into the Central American coastline. At is height on October 26 and 27, the hurricane had sustained winds of 180 mph and triggered 4 days of heavy incessant rains. The devastation wrought across a broad portion of Central America was unprecedented. This short-lived extreme event set back economic development in the most affected countries by perhaps more than a decade."
