This documents discusses how unexpected emergencies involving radiation or radioactive materials have the potential to cause adverse health effects for large segments of the population and animals, either through direct exposure or indirectly through consumption of or contact with radiation sources or radioactively contaminated products. It identifies how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must prepare to respond to these emergencies and provide the necessary resources to address the myriad of health issues that could arise.
