From the opening statement of subcommittee chairman Jeff Sessions: "The subcommittee welcomes Secretary Kendall and other distinguished officials. The witnesses represent the policy, acquisition, force structure and warfighter components of the U.S. nuclear weapons. Collectively they comprise the Nuclear Weapons Council, a body established by Congress in 1986 to facilitate cooperation and coordination between the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy. Today's hearing, however, will go beyond the specifics of the nuclear stockpile to address broader nuclear policy and strategy issues as the members see fit."
