"This article examines mental health factors in aviation and was written for the operational flight surgeon. It is contained as a chapter in the most recent edition of The Flight Surgeon's Guide. The major goal of this publication is to augment flight surgeon's prior psychiatric training with specific aeromedical applications of mental health principles and practices. A few of the specific objectives include: Elucidating the use of the Adaptability Rating for Military Aviation, providing a general understanding of human factors in aviation, examining concepts regarding pilot personality, covering important concepts in Critical Incident Stress Management, examining aviators' typical motivations to fly, and teaching important principles of treatment for psychiatric emergencies in aviation-related situations."
