ABSTRACT

Jails in Indian Country, 2011   [open pdf - 1MB]

"A total of 2,239 inmates were confined in 80 Indian country jails at midyear 2011 (figure 1). The 5.7% increase from the 2,119 inmates confined in 75 operating facilities at midyear 2010 was the result of 5 additional facilities operating in 2011. During the 12-month period between June 2010 and 2011, the average number of inmates per operating facility remained stable at about 28 inmates. On June 30, 2011, the number of American Indians and Alaska Natives confined in jails outside of Indian country (9,400) was about four times the number held in jails in Indian country."
