"Last year, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsored regional hurricane preparedness exercises to increase the preparedness of the Nation for the 2006 hurricane season. Building upon the successes of the 2006 effort, the Department will conduct a national level functional exercise as well as a number of regional hurricane preparedness workshops in preparation for the 2007 hurricane season. The national level functional exercise will take place in Region I April 30 -- May 10, 2007. Regional workshops will be conducted in Regions II, III, IV, VI, and IX, as well as the Caribbean Division and Pacific Area offices. The Region I workshop will be incorporated into the larger national-level functional exercise activities. Regional workshops will support regional hurricane planning efforts. Workshop dates will be announced soon. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has developed and distributed a 2007 national-level hurricane Contingency Plan (CONPLAN). This plan serves as the basis for development of regional CONPLANs for the 2007 hurricane season. Regional workshops will serve to review and validate the regional Concept of Operations (CONOPS), providing stakeholders an opportunity to synchronize regional plans with State and national plans prior to the 2007 hurricane season."
