In February 2005, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis backed opposition politician Karolos Papoulias for President. The government has an ambitious free-market economic policy to enhance growth and create. Its foreign policy focuses on the European Union, relations with Turkey, reunifying Cyprus, the Balkans, resolving a dispute with Macedonia over its name, and improving relations with the United States.
