"Within the next two to four years, seven of nine senior leaders in the Iowa City Fire Department [ICFD] will be eligible to retire. These leaders will depart with vast amounts of organizational knowledge and leadership expertise. The problem is that no succession plan exists to replace these officers if they leave the fire department. The purpose of this Applied Research Project (ARP) is to identify how the ICFD can implement a succession plan to prepare both the organization and future leaders for success. Descriptive research methods were used to answer the following questions: 1) What is succession planning? 2) What are the components of an effective succession plan? 3) What is the ICFD organizational attitude toward succession planning? 4) What components should the ICFD use in development of a succession plan?"
