Creating a Geospatially Enabled National Fire Incident Reporting System Data Set for Camano Island Fire and Rescue   [open pdf - 1MB]

"Camano Island Fire and Rescue (CIFR) has been collecting and reporting incident data to the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) since 2001. While industry-specific incident reporting software (ACS Firehouse) has been used to record incident data, data mining using Firehouse has proven to be cumbersome. The problem is that Camano Island Fire and Rescue's NFIRS data do not allow retrieval in a format that will readily support community risk reduction, operational, and strategic planning programs. The purpose of the present research project was to develop a sample geospatially enabled NFIRS data set that could provide supporting data to better manage these programs. An action research method was chosen for this applied research project. Literature review, database design, and spatial analysis were conducted to answer the following three research questions: How can CIFR represent NFIRS data in a GIS? How can CIFR link or import NFIRS data into a GIS? How can CIFR demonstrate the use of a geospatially enabled NFIRS data set for community risk reduction, operational, and strategic planning programs?"
