Line in the Sand: Confronting the Threat at the Southwest Border   [open pdf - 1MB]

This report from the Subcommittee on Investigations, Select Committee on Homeland Security investigates the criminal activity occurring on the United States and Mexican border. The report found that there is a large criminal enterprise operating in cross-border operations to include drug and weapons smuggling and human trafficking. It examines the origins of the enterprises and the effect this activity has on the border towns. Additionally, the report describes how the border poses a significant problem in allowing terrorists and other criminal elements to enter the country. It describes current measures to patrol the border with discussion on the effectiveness of current efforts. A set of recommendations to stem the criminal and illegal entries are offered.
