"'Understanding Community Policing' provides a conceptual framework that will be useful to practitioners interested in implementing or expanding community policing initiatives. Chapter 2 describes the reasons why police professionals throughout the United States have been searching for an alternative policing strategy and traces the roots of community policing. The two defining elements of community policing - community partnership and problem solving - are examined in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 presents the basic organizational and operational elements associated with the implementation of a community policing strategy.
