Alternate Title: 9/11 Commission, Second Public Hearing: Statement of Mary Schiavo, May 23, 2003
The second public hearing of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States was held on May 22-23, 2003 in Washington, DC. The Commission heard testimony on Congressional oversight as well as the state of the aviation security before and after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. This testimony was part of a panel entitled "Reforming Civil Aviation Security: Next Steps". In this statement before the Commission, Schiavo addresses the issues of why the government's mind set and approach prevents any real change and lasting commitment to security; what are our most serious threats and what can we do about them; and what can the people of the United States of America do to help keep aviation secure. Schiavo was Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Transportation from 1990 to 1996.
