"This report outlines the urgent developmental and social needs faced by Tajikistan since the settlement of its five-year civil war in 1997. It discusses U.S. policy and assistance, including economic aid and Tajikistan's contribution to the campaign against terrorism. The report also addresses foreign policy and defense of Tajikistan, the priorities of which include beneficial trade and investment to support economic growth, protecting territorial integrity, boosting security, and furthering Tajikistan's prestige in the world. It also presents a brief synopsis of the Tajik Civil War. Political and economic developments include a steady increase in authoritarian rule and serious human rights abuses.
